Chozick Family Art Gallery in partnership with Kristen Lorello is pleased to present a selection of new worksby Brooklyn-based painter KB Jones. This solo show follows her participation in a group show at the galleryin August and draws inspiration from quotidian moments and overlooked objects captured in photographsby the artist around the Upper East Side, a place the artist long called home.
This show builds upon and combines two distinct styles Jones has become known for: lush, photorealist oil paintings of unexpected objects—such as her iconic trash bag series—and cartoon-influenced depictions of domestic scenes rendered in industrial house paint. For the first time, Jones has merged these two mediums, and consequently these two visual languages, on individual canvases, marking an exciting evolution in her artistic practice.
Many of the paintings were conceived in pairs. A cartoon-like black-and-grey hot dog stand contrasts with a naturalistic Upper East Side street scene, drawing attention to the simple pleasures of these classic New York sights and treats. Its mirror image features an oil-paint still life of a hot dog stand set against a flat, mint-green cartoon background—rendering the familiar deliciously strange. Serving as translations of each other, these pairs invite viewers to shift their perspective, reconsidering what they might otherwise overlook.By juxtaposing the high and low, and by swiftly turning the scene on its head, Jones asks us to look again—more closely—at what we pass by every day.
The catalyst for the project, and its centerpiece, is a pair of presents wrapped in red paper and tied with silver bows: one features a Minnie Mouse-style bow against a buttery background, the other a bow so realistic it tempts a tug against a one-dimensional red ground. Through her renderings of a Ladurée bag, a line of student backpacks, zoomed-in scenes from Central Park, and frames from the Met, Jones captures the joy derived from the banal yet decorative objects that dot our daily lives—reminding us that sometimes, the wrapping is just as good as what’s waiting inside.
